- 1 Enter the King, Gloucester, Bishop of Winchester, Exeter, York, Warwick
- 2 and Vernon; Suffolk, Somerset, Basset and others. To them, with his
- 3 soldiers, Talbot.
- 4 TALBOT.
- 5 My gracious Prince, and honourable peers,
- 6 Hearing of your arrival in this realm,
- 7 I have awhile given truce unto my wars
- 8 To do my duty to my sovereign;
- 9 In sign whereof, this arm, that hath reclaim’d
- 10 To your obedience fifty fortresses,
- 11 Twelve cities and seven walled towns of strength,
- 12 Beside five hundred prisoners of esteem,
- 13 Lets fall his sword before your Highness’ feet,
- 14 And with submissive loyalty of heart
- 15 Ascribes the glory of his conquest got
- 16 First to my God, and next unto your Grace. [_Kneels_.]
- 17 KING HENRY.
- 18 Is this the Lord Talbot, uncle Gloucester,
- 19 That hath so long been resident in France?
- 20 GLOUCESTER.
- 21 Yes, if it please your Majesty, my liege.
- 22 KING HENRY.
- 23 Welcome, brave captain and victorious lord!
- 24 When I was young, as yet I am not old,
- 25 I do remember how my father said
- 26 A stouter champion never handled sword.
- 27 Long since we were resolved of your truth,
- 28 Your faithful service, and your toil in war;
- 29 Yet never have you tasted our reward,
- 30 Or been reguerdon’d with so much as thanks.
- 31 Because till now we never saw your face.
- 32 Therefore, stand up; and for these good deserts
- 33 We here create you Earl of Shrewsbury;
- 34 And in our coronation take your place.
- 35 [_Sennet. Flourish. Exeunt all but Vernon and Basset._]
- 36 VERNON.
- 37 Now, sir, to you that were so hot at sea,
- 38 Disgracing of these colours that I wear
- 39 In honour of my noble Lord of York,
- 40 Dar’st thou maintain the former words thou spak’st?
- 41 BASSET.
- 42 Yes, sir, as well as you dare patronage
- 43 The envious barking of your saucy tongue
- 44 Against my lord the Duke of Somerset.
- 45 VERNON.
- 46 Sirrah, thy lord I honour as he is.
- 47 BASSET.
- 48 Why, what is he? As good a man as York.
- 49 VERNON.
- 50 Hark ye; not so: in witness, take ye that.
- 51 [_Strikes him._]
- 52 BASSET.
- 53 Villain, thou knowest the law of arms is such
- 54 That whoso draws a sword, ’tis present death,
- 55 Or else this blow should broach thy dearest blood.
- 56 But I’ll unto his Majesty, and crave
- 57 I may have liberty to venge this wrong;
- 58 When thou shalt see I’ll meet thee to thy cost.
- 59 VERNON.
- 60 Well, miscreant, I’ll be there as soon as you;
- 61 And, after, meet you sooner than you would.
- 62 [_Exeunt._]
