- 1 Enter Somerset with his army; a Captain of Talbot’s with him.
- 2 SOMERSET.
- 3 It is too late; I cannot send them now.
- 4 This expedition was by York and Talbot
- 5 Too rashly plotted. All our general force
- 6 Might with a sally of the very town
- 7 Be buckled with. The over-daring Talbot
- 8 Hath sullied all his gloss of former honour
- 9 By this unheedful, desperate, wild adventure.
- 10 York set him on to fight and die in shame
- 11 That, Talbot dead, great York might bear the name.
- 12 CAPTAIN.
- 13 Here is Sir William Lucy, who with me
- 14 Set from our o’er-match’d forces forth for aid.
- 15 Enter Sir William Lucy.
- 16 SOMERSET.
- 17 How now, Sir William, whither were you sent?
- 18 LUCY.
- 19 Whither, my lord? From bought and sold Lord Talbot,
- 20 Who, ring’d about with bold adversity,
- 21 Cries out for noble York and Somerset
- 22 To beat assailing Death from his weak legions;
- 23 And whiles the honourable captain there
- 24 Drops bloody sweat from his war-wearied limbs,
- 25 And, in advantage lingering, looks for rescue,
- 26 You, his false hopes, the trust of England’s honour,
- 27 Keep off aloof with worthless emulation.
- 28 Let not your private discord keep away
- 29 The levied succours that should lend him aid,
- 30 While he, renowned noble gentleman,
- 31 Yield up his life unto a world of odds.
- 32 Orleans the Bastard, Charles, Burgundy,
- 33 Alençon, Reignier, compass him about,
- 34 And Talbot perisheth by your default.
- 35 SOMERSET.
- 36 York set him on; York should have sent him aid.
- 37 LUCY.
- 38 And York as fast upon your Grace exclaims,
- 39 Swearing that you withhold his levied host
- 40 Collected for this expedition.
- 41 SOMERSET.
- 42 York lies; he might have sent and had the horse.
- 43 I owe him little duty, and less love,
- 44 And take foul scorn to fawn on him by sending.
- 45 LUCY.
- 46 The fraud of England, not the force of France,
- 47 Hath now entrapp’d the noble-minded Talbot.
- 48 Never to England shall he bear his life,
- 49 But dies betray’d to fortune by your strife.
- 50 SOMERSET.
- 51 Come, go; I will dispatch the horsemen straight.
- 52 Within six hours they will be at his aid.
- 53 LUCY.
- 54 Too late comes rescue; he is ta’en or slain,
- 55 For fly he could not if he would have fled;
- 56 And fly would Talbot never, though he might.
- 57 SOMERSET.
- 58 If he be dead, brave Talbot, then adieu!
- 59 LUCY.
- 60 His fame lives in the world, his shame in you.
- 61 [_Exeunt._]
