- 1 Enter York, Salisbury and Warwick.
- 2 YORK.
- 3 Now, my good Lords of Salisbury and Warwick,
- 4 Our simple supper ended, give me leave
- 5 In this close walk to satisfy myself
- 6 In craving your opinion of my title,
- 7 Which is infallible, to England’s crown.
- 8 SALISBURY.
- 9 My lord, I long to hear it at full.
- 10 WARWICK.
- 11 Sweet York, begin; and if thy claim be good,
- 12 The Nevilles are thy subjects to command.
- 13 YORK.
- 14 Then thus:
- 15 Edward the Third, my lords, had seven sons:
- 16 The first, Edward the Black Prince, Prince of Wales;
- 17 The second, William of Hatfield; and the third,
- 18 Lionel, Duke of Clarence; next to whom
- 19 Was John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster;
- 20 The fifth was Edmund Langley, Duke of York;
- 21 The sixth was Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester;
- 22 William of Windsor was the seventh and last.
- 23 Edward the Black Prince died before his father
- 24 And left behind him Richard, his only son,
- 25 Who after Edward the Third’s death reigned as king,
- 26 Till Henry Bolingbroke, Duke of Lancaster,
- 27 The eldest son and heir of John of Gaunt,
- 28 Crowned by the name of Henry the Fourth,
- 29 Seized on the realm, deposed the rightful king,
- 30 Sent his poor queen to France, from whence she came,
- 31 And him to Pomfret; where, as all you know,
- 32 Harmless Richard was murdered traitorously.
- 33 WARWICK.
- 34 Father, the Duke hath told the truth;
- 35 Thus got the house of Lancaster the crown.
- 36 YORK.
- 37 Which now they hold by force and not by right;
- 38 For Richard, the first son’s heir, being dead,
- 39 The issue of the next son should have reigned.
- 40 SALISBURY.
- 41 But William of Hatfield died without an heir.
- 42 YORK.
- 43 The third son, Duke of Clarence, from whose line
- 44 I claim the crown, had issue, Philippa, a daughter,
- 45 Who married Edmund Mortimer, Earl of March.
- 46 Edmund had issue, Roger, Earl of March;
- 47 Roger had issue, Edmund, Anne, and Eleanor.
- 48 SALISBURY.
- 49 This Edmund, in the reign of Bolingbroke,
- 50 As I have read, laid claim unto the crown
- 51 And, but for Owen Glendower, had been king,
- 52 Who kept him in captivity till he died.
- 53 But to the rest.
- 54 YORK.
- 55 His eldest sister, Anne,
- 56 My mother, being heir unto the crown,
- 57 Married Richard Earl of Cambridge, who was son
- 58 To Edmund Langley, Edward the Third’s fifth son.
- 59 By her I claim the kingdom; she was heir
- 60 To Roger, Earl of March, who was the son
- 61 Of Edmund Mortimer, who married Philippa,
- 62 Sole daughter unto Lionel, Duke of Clarence.
- 63 So, if the issue of the elder son
- 64 Succeed before the younger, I am king.
- 65 WARWICK.
- 66 What plain proceeding is more plain than this?
- 67 Henry doth claim the crown from John of Gaunt,
- 68 The fourth son; York claims it from the third.
- 69 Till Lionel’s issue fails, his should not reign;
- 70 It fails not yet, but flourishes in thee
- 71 And in thy sons, fair slips of such a stock.
- 72 Then, father Salisbury, kneel we together,
- 73 And in this private plot be we the first
- 74 That shall salute our rightful sovereign
- 75 With honour of his birthright to the crown.
- 76 BOTH.
- 77 Long live our sovereign Richard, England’s king!
- 78 YORK.
- 79 We thank you, lords. But I am not your king
- 80 Till I be crowned, and that my sword be stained
- 81 With heart-blood of the house of Lancaster;
- 82 And that’s not suddenly to be performed,
- 83 But with advice and silent secrecy.
- 84 Do you as I do in these dangerous days—
- 85 Wink at the Duke of Suffolk’s insolence,
- 86 At Beaufort’s pride, at Somerset’s ambition,
- 87 At Buckingham, and all the crew of them,
- 88 Till they have snared the shepherd of the flock,
- 89 That virtuous prince, the good Duke Humphrey.
- 90 ’Tis that they seek; and they, in seeking that,
- 91 Shall find their deaths, if York can prophesy.
- 92 SALISBURY.
- 93 My lord, break we off; we know your mind at full.
- 94 WARWICK.
- 95 My heart assures me that the Earl of Warwick
- 96 Shall one day make the Duke of York a king.
- 97 YORK.
- 98 And, Neville, this I do assure myself:
- 99 Richard shall live to make the Earl of Warwick
- 100 The greatest man in England but the king.
- 101 [_Exeunt._]
