- 1 Alarum. Retreat. Enter York, Richard, Warwick and Soldiers with drum
- 2 and colours.
- 3 YORK.
- 4 Of Salisbury, who can report of him,
- 5 That winter lion, who in rage forgets
- 6 Aged contusions and all brush of time,
- 7 And, like a gallant in the brow of youth,
- 8 Repairs him with occasion? This happy day
- 9 Is not itself, nor have we won one foot,
- 10 If Salisbury be lost.
- 11 RICHARD.
- 12 My noble father,
- 13 Three times today I holp him to his horse,
- 14 Three times bestrid him; thrice I led him off,
- 15 Persuaded him from any further act;
- 16 But still, where danger was, still there I met him,
- 17 And like rich hangings in a homely house,
- 18 So was his will in his old feeble body.
- 19 But, noble as he is, look where he comes.
- 20 Enter Salisbury.
- 21 Now, by my sword, well hast thou fought today.
- 22 SALISBURY.
- 23 By th’ mass, so did we all. I thank you, Richard.
- 24 God knows how long it is I have to live,
- 25 And it hath pleased him that three times today
- 26 You have defended me from imminent death.
- 27 Well, lords, we have not got that which we have;
- 28 ’Tis not enough our foes are this time fled,
- 29 Being opposites of such repairing nature.
- 30 YORK.
- 31 I know our safety is to follow them;
- 32 For, as I hear, the King is fled to London
- 33 To call a present court of parliament.
- 34 Let us pursue him ere the writs go forth.
- 35 What says Lord Warwick? Shall we after them?
- 36 WARWICK.
- 37 After them? Nay, before them, if we can.
- 38 Now, by my hand, lords, ’twas a glorious day.
- 39 Saint Albans battle won by famous York
- 40 Shall be eternized in all age to come.
- 41 Sound drums and trumpets, and to London all;
- 42 And more such days as these to us befall!
- 43 [_Exeunt._]
