- 1 Enter a Shipmaster and a Boatswain severally.
- 2 MASTER.
- 3 Boatswain!
- 4 BOATSWAIN.
- 5 Here, master: what cheer?
- 6 MASTER.
- 7 Good! Speak to the mariners: fall to ’t yarely, or we run ourselves
- 8 aground: bestir, bestir.
- 9 [_Exit._]
- 10 Enter Mariners.
- 11 BOATSWAIN.
- 12 Heigh, my hearts! cheerly, cheerly, my hearts! yare, yare! Take in the
- 13 topsail. Tend to th’ master’s whistle. Blow till thou burst thy wind,
- 14 if room enough.
- 15 Enter Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio, Ferdinand, Gonzalo and others.
- 16 ALONSO.
- 17 Good boatswain, have care. Where’s the master?
- 18 Play the men.
- 19 BOATSWAIN.
- 20 I pray now, keep below.
- 21 ANTONIO.
- 22 Where is the master, boson?
- 23 BOATSWAIN.
- 24 Do you not hear him? You mar our labour: keep your cabins: you do
- 25 assist the storm.
- 26 GONZALO.
- 27 Nay, good, be patient.
- 28 BOATSWAIN.
- 29 When the sea is. Hence! What cares these roarers for the name of king?
- 30 To cabin! silence! Trouble us not.
- 31 GONZALO.
- 32 Good, yet remember whom thou hast aboard.
- 33 BOATSWAIN.
- 34 None that I more love than myself. You are a counsellor: if you can
- 35 command these elements to silence, and work the peace of the present,
- 36 we will not hand a rope more. Use your authority: if you cannot, give
- 37 thanks you have lived so long, and make yourself ready in your cabin
- 38 for the mischance of the hour, if it so hap.—Cheerly, good hearts!—Out
- 39 of our way, I say.
- 40 [_Exit._]
- 41 GONZALO.
- 42 I have great comfort from this fellow. Methinks he hath no drowning
- 43 mark upon him. His complexion is perfect gallows. Stand fast, good
- 44 Fate, to his hanging! Make the rope of his destiny our cable, for our
- 45 own doth little advantage! If he be not born to be hang’d, our case is
- 46 miserable.
- 47 [_Exeunt._]
- 48 Re-enter Boatswain.
- 49 BOATSWAIN.
- 50 Down with the topmast! yare! lower, lower! Bring her to try wi’ th’
- 51 maincourse.
- 52 [_A cry within._]
- 53 A plague upon this howling! They are louder than the weather or our
- 54 office.
- 55 Enter Sebastian, Antonio and Gonzalo.
- 56 Yet again! What do you here? Shall we give o’er, and drown? Have you a
- 57 mind to sink?
- 58 SEBASTIAN.
- 59 A pox o’ your throat, you bawling, blasphemous, incharitable dog!
- 60 BOATSWAIN.
- 61 Work you, then.
- 62 ANTONIO.
- 63 Hang, cur, hang, you whoreson, insolent noisemaker! We are less afraid
- 64 to be drowned than thou art.
- 65 GONZALO.
- 66 I’ll warrant him for drowning, though the ship were no stronger than a
- 67 nutshell, and as leaky as an unstanched wench.
- 68 BOATSWAIN.
- 69 Lay her a-hold, a-hold! Set her two courses: off to sea again: lay her
- 70 off.
- 71 Enter Mariners, wet.
- 72 MARINERS.
- 73 All lost! to prayers, to prayers! all lost!
- 74 [_Exeunt._]
- 75 BOATSWAIN.
- 76 What, must our mouths be cold?
- 77 GONZALO.
- 78 The King and Prince at prayers! Let’s assist them,
- 79 For our case is as theirs.
- 80 SEBASTIAN.
- 81 I am out of patience.
- 82 ANTONIO.
- 83 We are merely cheated of our lives by drunkards.
- 84 This wide-chapp’d rascal—would thou might’st lie drowning
- 85 The washing of ten tides!
- 86 GONZALO.
- 87 He’ll be hang’d yet,
- 88 Though every drop of water swear against it,
- 89 And gape at wid’st to glut him.
- 90 _A confused noise within: _“Mercy on us!”—
- 91 “We split, we split!”—“Farewell, my wife and children!”—
- 92 “Farewell, brother!”—“We split, we split, we split!”
- 93 ANTONIO.
- 94 Let’s all sink wi’ th’ King.
- 95 [_Exit._]
- 96 SEBASTIAN.
- 97 Let’s take leave of him.
- 98 [_Exit._]
- 99 GONZALO.
- 100 Now would I give a thousand furlongs of sea for an acre of barren
- 101 ground. Long heath, brown furze, anything. The wills above be done! but
- 102 I would fain die a dry death.
- 103 [_Exit._]
