The Tempest

  1. 1 Enter a Shipmaster and a Boatswain severally.
  2. 2 MASTER.
  3. 3 Boatswain!
  4. 4 BOATSWAIN.
  5. 5 Here, master: what cheer?
  6. 6 MASTER.
  7. 7 Good! Speak to the mariners: fall to ’t yarely, or we run ourselves
  8. 8 aground: bestir, bestir.
  9. 9 [_Exit._]
  10. 10 Enter Mariners.
  11. 11 BOATSWAIN.
  12. 12 Heigh, my hearts! cheerly, cheerly, my hearts! yare, yare! Take in the
  13. 13 topsail. Tend to th’ master’s whistle. Blow till thou burst thy wind,
  14. 14 if room enough.
  15. 15 Enter Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio, Ferdinand, Gonzalo and others.
  16. 16 ALONSO.
  17. 17 Good boatswain, have care. Where’s the master?
  18. 18 Play the men.
  19. 19 BOATSWAIN.
  20. 20 I pray now, keep below.
  21. 21 ANTONIO.
  22. 22 Where is the master, boson?
  23. 23 BOATSWAIN.
  24. 24 Do you not hear him? You mar our labour: keep your cabins: you do
  25. 25 assist the storm.
  26. 26 GONZALO.
  27. 27 Nay, good, be patient.
  28. 28 BOATSWAIN.
  29. 29 When the sea is. Hence! What cares these roarers for the name of king?
  30. 30 To cabin! silence! Trouble us not.
  31. 31 GONZALO.
  32. 32 Good, yet remember whom thou hast aboard.
  33. 33 BOATSWAIN.
  34. 34 None that I more love than myself. You are a counsellor: if you can
  35. 35 command these elements to silence, and work the peace of the present,
  36. 36 we will not hand a rope more. Use your authority: if you cannot, give
  37. 37 thanks you have lived so long, and make yourself ready in your cabin
  38. 38 for the mischance of the hour, if it so hap.—Cheerly, good hearts!—Out
  39. 39 of our way, I say.
  40. 40 [_Exit._]
  41. 41 GONZALO.
  42. 42 I have great comfort from this fellow. Methinks he hath no drowning
  43. 43 mark upon him. His complexion is perfect gallows. Stand fast, good
  44. 44 Fate, to his hanging! Make the rope of his destiny our cable, for our
  45. 45 own doth little advantage! If he be not born to be hang’d, our case is
  46. 46 miserable.
  47. 47 [_Exeunt._]
  48. 48 Re-enter Boatswain.
  49. 49 BOATSWAIN.
  50. 50 Down with the topmast! yare! lower, lower! Bring her to try wi’ th’
  51. 51 maincourse.
  52. 52 [_A cry within._]
  53. 53 A plague upon this howling! They are louder than the weather or our
  54. 54 office.
  55. 55 Enter Sebastian, Antonio and Gonzalo.
  56. 56 Yet again! What do you here? Shall we give o’er, and drown? Have you a
  57. 57 mind to sink?
  58. 58 SEBASTIAN.
  59. 59 A pox o’ your throat, you bawling, blasphemous, incharitable dog!
  60. 60 BOATSWAIN.
  61. 61 Work you, then.
  62. 62 ANTONIO.
  63. 63 Hang, cur, hang, you whoreson, insolent noisemaker! We are less afraid
  64. 64 to be drowned than thou art.
  65. 65 GONZALO.
  66. 66 I’ll warrant him for drowning, though the ship were no stronger than a
  67. 67 nutshell, and as leaky as an unstanched wench.
  68. 68 BOATSWAIN.
  69. 69 Lay her a-hold, a-hold! Set her two courses: off to sea again: lay her
  70. 70 off.
  71. 71 Enter Mariners, wet.
  72. 72 MARINERS.
  73. 73 All lost! to prayers, to prayers! all lost!
  74. 74 [_Exeunt._]
  75. 75 BOATSWAIN.
  76. 76 What, must our mouths be cold?
  77. 77 GONZALO.
  78. 78 The King and Prince at prayers! Let’s assist them,
  79. 79 For our case is as theirs.
  80. 80 SEBASTIAN.
  81. 81 I am out of patience.
  82. 82 ANTONIO.
  83. 83 We are merely cheated of our lives by drunkards.
  84. 84 This wide-chapp’d rascal—would thou might’st lie drowning
  85. 85 The washing of ten tides!
  86. 86 GONZALO.
  87. 87 He’ll be hang’d yet,
  88. 88 Though every drop of water swear against it,
  89. 89 And gape at wid’st to glut him.
  90. 90 _A confused noise within: _“Mercy on us!”—
  91. 91 “We split, we split!”—“Farewell, my wife and children!”—
  92. 92 “Farewell, brother!”—“We split, we split, we split!”
  93. 93 ANTONIO.
  94. 94 Let’s all sink wi’ th’ King.
  95. 95 [_Exit._]
  96. 96 SEBASTIAN.
  97. 97 Let’s take leave of him.
  98. 98 [_Exit._]
  99. 99 GONZALO.
  100. 100 Now would I give a thousand furlongs of sea for an acre of barren
  101. 101 ground. Long heath, brown furze, anything. The wills above be done! but
  102. 102 I would fain die a dry death.
  103. 103 [_Exit._]
