- 1 Enter Warwick and Oxford in England, with French Soldiers.
- 2 WARWICK.
- 3 Trust me, my lord, all hitherto goes well;
- 4 The common people by numbers swarm to us.
- 5 Enter George (Duke of Clarence) and Somerset.
- 6 But see where Somerset and Clarence comes.
- 7 Speak suddenly, my lords: are we all friends?
- 8 GEORGE.
- 9 Fear not that, my lord.
- 10 WARWICK.
- 11 Then, gentle Clarence, welcome unto Warwick;
- 12 And welcome, Somerset. I hold it cowardice
- 13 To rest mistrustful where a noble heart
- 14 Hath pawned an open hand in sign of love;
- 15 Else might I think that Clarence, Edward’s brother,
- 16 Were but a feigned friend to our proceedings.
- 17 But welcome, sweet Clarence; my daughter shall be thine.
- 18 And now what rests but, in night’s coverture,
- 19 Thy brother being carelessly encamped,
- 20 His soldiers lurking in the towns about,
- 21 And but attended by a simple guard,
- 22 We may surprise and take him at our pleasure?
- 23 Our scouts have found the adventure very easy;
- 24 That, as Ulysses and stout Diomede
- 25 With sleight and manhood stole to Rhesus’ tents,
- 26 And brought from thence the Thracian fatal steeds,
- 27 So we, well covered with the night’s black mantle,
- 28 At unawares may beat down Edward’s guard,
- 29 And seize himself. I say not, slaughter him,
- 30 For I intend but only to surprise him.
- 31 You that will follow me to this attempt,
- 32 Applaud the name of Henry with your leader.
- 33 [_They all cry “Henry!”_]
- 34 Why then, let’s on our way in silent sort,
- 35 For Warwick and his friends, God and Saint George!
- 36 [_Exeunt._]
