- 1 Enter Queen Elizabeth and Rivers.
- 2 RIVERS.
- 3 Madam, what makes you in this sudden change?
- 4 QUEEN ELIZABETH.
- 5 Why, brother Rivers, are you yet to learn
- 6 What late misfortune is befall’n King Edward?
- 7 RIVERS.
- 8 What, loss of some pitched battle against Warwick?
- 9 QUEEN ELIZABETH.
- 10 No, but the loss of his own royal person.
- 11 RIVERS.
- 12 Then is my sovereign slain?
- 13 QUEEN ELIZABETH.
- 14 Ay, almost slain, for he is taken prisoner,
- 15 Either betrayed by falsehood of his guard
- 16 Or by his foe surprised at unawares;
- 17 And, as I further have to understand,
- 18 Is new committed to the Bishop of York,
- 19 Fell Warwick’s brother and by that our foe.
- 20 RIVERS.
- 21 These news, I must confess, are full of grief;
- 22 Yet, gracious madam, bear it as you may.
- 23 Warwick may lose that now hath won the day.
- 24 QUEEN ELIZABETH.
- 25 Till then, fair hope must hinder life’s decay;
- 26 And I the rather wean me from despair
- 27 For love of Edward’s offspring in my womb.
- 28 This is it that makes me bridle passion
- 29 And bear with mildness my misfortune’s cross,
- 30 Ay, ay, for this I draw in many a tear
- 31 And stop the rising of blood-sucking sighs,
- 32 Lest with my sighs or tears I blast or drown
- 33 King Edward’s fruit, true heir to th’ English crown.
- 34 RIVERS.
- 35 But, madam, where is Warwick then become?
- 36 QUEEN ELIZABETH.
- 37 I am informed that he comes towards London
- 38 To set the crown once more on Henry’s head.
- 39 Guess thou the rest: King Edward’s friends must down.
- 40 But to prevent the tyrant’s violence—
- 41 For trust not him that hath once broken faith—
- 42 I’ll hence forthwith unto the sanctuary
- 43 To save at least the heir of Edward’s right.
- 44 There shall I rest secure from force and fraud.
- 45 Come, therefore, let us fly while we may fly.
- 46 If Warwick take us, we are sure to die.
- 47 [_Exeunt._]
