← Back to browse The Third Part Of King Henry The Sixth
- 1 Flourish. Enter King Edward, Queen Elizabeth, George, Richard,
- 2 Hastings, Nurse, carrying infant Prince Edward, and Attendants.
- 3 KING EDWARD.
- 4 Once more we sit in England’s royal throne,
- 5 Repurchased with the blood of enemies.
- 6 What valiant foemen, like to autumn’s corn,
- 7 Have we mowed down in tops of all their pride!
- 8 Three Dukes of Somerset, threefold renowned
- 9 For hardy and undoubted champions;
- 10 Two Cliffords, as the father and the son;
- 11 And two Northumberlands; two braver men
- 12 Ne’er spurred their coursers at the trumpet’s sound;
- 13 With them the two brave bears, Warwick and Montague,
- 14 That in their chains fettered the kingly lion
- 15 And made the forest tremble when they roared.
- 16 Thus have we swept suspicion from our seat
- 17 And made our footstool of security.
- 18 Come hither, Bess, and let me kiss my boy.
- 19 Young Ned, for thee thine uncles and myself
- 20 Have in our armours watched the winter’s night,
- 21 Went all afoot in summer’s scalding heat,
- 22 That thou mightst repossess the crown in peace;
- 23 And of our labours thou shalt reap the gain.
- 24 RICHARD.
- 25 [_Aside_.] I’ll blast his harvest, if your head were laid;
- 26 For yet I am not looked on in the world.
- 27 This shoulder was ordained so thick to heave,
- 28 And heave it shall some weight or break my back.
- 29 Work thou the way, and that shall execute.
- 30 KING EDWARD.
- 31 Clarence and Gloucester, love my lovely Queen;
- 32 And kiss your princely nephew, brothers both.
- 33 GEORGE.
- 34 The duty that I owe unto your Majesty
- 35 I seal upon the lips of this sweet babe.
- 36 QUEEN ELIZABETH.
- 37 Thanks, noble Clarence; worthy brother, thanks.
- 38 RICHARD.
- 39 And, that I love the tree from whence thou sprang’st,
- 40 Witness the loving kiss I give the fruit.
- 41 [_Aside_.] To say the truth, so Judas kissed his master
- 42 And cried “All hail!” when as he meant all harm.
- 43 KING EDWARD.
- 44 Now am I seated as my soul delights,
- 45 Having my country’s peace and brothers’ loves.
- 46 GEORGE.
- 47 What will your Grace have done with Margaret?
- 48 Reignier, her father, to the King of France
- 49 Hath pawned the Sicils and Jerusalem,
- 50 And hither have they sent it for her ransom.
- 51 KING EDWARD.
- 52 Away with her and waft her hence to France.
- 53 And now what rests but that we spend the time
- 54 With stately triumphs, mirthful comic shows,
- 55 Such as befits the pleasure of the court?
- 56 Sound drums and trumpets! Farewell, sour annoy!
- 57 For here, I hope, begins our lasting joy.
- 58 [_Exeunt._]
