- 1 Enter Ventidius as it were in triumph, with Silius and other Romans,
- 2 Officers and Soldiers; the dead body of Pacorus borne before him.
- 3 VENTIDIUS.
- 4 Now, darting Parthia, art thou struck, and now
- 5 Pleased Fortune does of Marcus Crassus’ death
- 6 Make me revenger. Bear the king’s son’s body
- 7 Before our army. Thy Pacorus, Orodes,
- 8 Pays this for Marcus Crassus.
- 9 SILIUS.
- 10 Noble Ventidius,
- 11 Whilst yet with Parthian blood thy sword is warm,
- 12 The fugitive Parthians follow. Spur through Media,
- 13 Mesopotamia, and the shelters whither
- 14 The routed fly. So thy grand captain Antony
- 15 Shall set thee on triumphant chariots, and
- 16 Put garlands on thy head.
- 17 VENTIDIUS.
- 18 O Silius, Silius,
- 19 I have done enough. A lower place, note well,
- 20 May make too great an act. For learn this, Silius:
- 21 Better to leave undone than by our deed
- 22 Acquire too high a fame when him we serve’s away.
- 23 Caesar and Antony have ever won
- 24 More in their officer, than person. Sossius,
- 25 One of my place in Syria, his lieutenant,
- 26 For quick accumulation of renown,
- 27 Which he achieved by th’ minute, lost his favour.
- 28 Who does i’ th’ wars more than his captain can
- 29 Becomes his captain’s captain; and ambition,
- 30 The soldier’s virtue, rather makes choice of loss
- 31 Than gain which darkens him.
- 32 I could do more to do Antonius good,
- 33 But ’twould offend him, and in his offence
- 34 Should my performance perish.
- 35 SILIUS.
- 36 Thou hast, Ventidius, that
- 37 Without the which a soldier and his sword
- 38 Grants scarce distinction. Thou wilt write to Antony?
- 39 VENTIDIUS.
- 40 I’ll humbly signify what in his name,
- 41 That magical word of war, we have effected;
- 42 How, with his banners, and his well-paid ranks,
- 43 The ne’er-yet-beaten horse of Parthia
- 44 We have jaded out o’ th’ field.
- 45 SILIUS.
- 46 Where is he now?
- 47 VENTIDIUS.
- 48 He purposeth to Athens, whither, with what haste
- 49 The weight we must convey with ’s will permit,
- 50 We shall appear before him.—On there, pass along!
- 51 [_Exeunt._]
