The Tragedy Of Antony And Cleopatra

  1. 1 Enter Ventidius as it were in triumph, with Silius and other Romans,
  2. 2 Officers and Soldiers; the dead body of Pacorus borne before him.
  3. 3 VENTIDIUS.
  4. 4 Now, darting Parthia, art thou struck, and now
  5. 5 Pleased Fortune does of Marcus Crassus’ death
  6. 6 Make me revenger. Bear the king’s son’s body
  7. 7 Before our army. Thy Pacorus, Orodes,
  8. 8 Pays this for Marcus Crassus.
  9. 9 SILIUS.
  10. 10 Noble Ventidius,
  11. 11 Whilst yet with Parthian blood thy sword is warm,
  12. 12 The fugitive Parthians follow. Spur through Media,
  13. 13 Mesopotamia, and the shelters whither
  14. 14 The routed fly. So thy grand captain Antony
  15. 15 Shall set thee on triumphant chariots, and
  16. 16 Put garlands on thy head.
  17. 17 VENTIDIUS.
  18. 18 O Silius, Silius,
  19. 19 I have done enough. A lower place, note well,
  20. 20 May make too great an act. For learn this, Silius:
  21. 21 Better to leave undone than by our deed
  22. 22 Acquire too high a fame when him we serve’s away.
  23. 23 Caesar and Antony have ever won
  24. 24 More in their officer, than person. Sossius,
  25. 25 One of my place in Syria, his lieutenant,
  26. 26 For quick accumulation of renown,
  27. 27 Which he achieved by th’ minute, lost his favour.
  28. 28 Who does i’ th’ wars more than his captain can
  29. 29 Becomes his captain’s captain; and ambition,
  30. 30 The soldier’s virtue, rather makes choice of loss
  31. 31 Than gain which darkens him.
  32. 32 I could do more to do Antonius good,
  33. 33 But ’twould offend him, and in his offence
  34. 34 Should my performance perish.
  35. 35 SILIUS.
  36. 36 Thou hast, Ventidius, that
  37. 37 Without the which a soldier and his sword
  38. 38 Grants scarce distinction. Thou wilt write to Antony?
  39. 39 VENTIDIUS.
  40. 40 I’ll humbly signify what in his name,
  41. 41 That magical word of war, we have effected;
  42. 42 How, with his banners, and his well-paid ranks,
  43. 43 The ne’er-yet-beaten horse of Parthia
  44. 44 We have jaded out o’ th’ field.
  45. 45 SILIUS.
  46. 46 Where is he now?
  47. 47 VENTIDIUS.
  48. 48 He purposeth to Athens, whither, with what haste
  49. 49 The weight we must convey with ’s will permit,
  50. 50 We shall appear before him.—On there, pass along!
  51. 51 [_Exeunt._]
