- 1 Canidius marching with his land army one way over the stage, and
- 2 Taurus, the Lieutenant of Caesar, with his Army, the other way. After
- 3 their going in, is heard the noise of a sea fight.
- 4 Alarum. Enter Enobarbus.
- 5 ENOBARBUS.
- 6 Naught, naught, all naught! I can behold no longer.
- 7 Th’ Antoniad, the Egyptian admiral,
- 8 With all their sixty, fly and turn the rudder.
- 9 To see ’t mine eyes are blasted.
- 10 Enter Scarus.
- 11 SCARUS.
- 12 Gods and goddesses,
- 13 All the whole synod of them!
- 14 ENOBARBUS.
- 15 What’s thy passion?
- 16 SCARUS.
- 17 The greater cantle of the world is lost
- 18 With very ignorance. We have kissed away
- 19 Kingdoms and provinces.
- 20 ENOBARBUS.
- 21 How appears the fight?
- 22 SCARUS.
- 23 On our side, like the tokened pestilence,
- 24 Where death is sure. Yon ribaudred nag of Egypt,
- 25 Whom leprosy o’ertake, i’ th’ midst o’ th’ fight,
- 26 When vantage like a pair of twins appeared,
- 27 Both as the same—or, rather, ours the elder—
- 28 The breeze upon her, like a cow in June,
- 29 Hoists sails and flies.
- 30 ENOBARBUS.
- 31 That I beheld.
- 32 Mine eyes did sicken at the sight and could not
- 33 Endure a further view.
- 34 SCARUS.
- 35 She once being loofed,
- 36 The noble ruin of her magic, Antony,
- 37 Claps on his sea-wing and, like a doting mallard,
- 38 Leaving the fight in height, flies after her.
- 39 I never saw an action of such shame.
- 40 Experience, manhood, honour, ne’er before
- 41 Did violate so itself.
- 42 ENOBARBUS.
- 43 Alack, alack!
- 44 Enter Canidius.
- 45 CANIDIUS.
- 46 Our fortune on the sea is out of breath
- 47 And sinks most lamentably. Had our general
- 48 Been what he knew himself, it had gone well.
- 49 O, he has given example for our flight
- 50 Most grossly by his own!
- 51 ENOBARBUS.
- 52 Ay, are you thereabouts?
- 53 Why, then, good night indeed.
- 54 CANIDIUS.
- 55 Toward Peloponnesus are they fled.
- 56 SCARUS.
- 57 ’Tis easy to’t, and there I will attend
- 58 What further comes.
- 59 CANIDIUS.
- 60 To Caesar will I render
- 61 My legions and my horse. Six kings already
- 62 Show me the way of yielding.
- 63 ENOBARBUS.
- 64 I’ll yet follow
- 65 The wounded chance of Antony, though my reason
- 66 Sits in the wind against me.
- 67 [_Exeunt._]
