- 1 Enter Antony and Octavia.
- 2 ANTONY.
- 3 Nay, nay, Octavia, not only that—
- 4 That were excusable, that and thousands more
- 5 Of semblable import—but he hath waged
- 6 New wars ’gainst Pompey; made his will, and read it
- 7 To public ear;
- 8 Spoke scantly of me; when perforce he could not
- 9 But pay me terms of honour, cold and sickly
- 10 He vented them; most narrow measure lent me;
- 11 When the best hint was given him, he not took ’t,
- 12 Or did it from his teeth.
- 13 OCTAVIA.
- 14 O, my good lord,
- 15 Believe not all, or if you must believe,
- 16 Stomach not all. A more unhappy lady,
- 17 If this division chance, ne’er stood between,
- 18 Praying for both parts.
- 19 The good gods will mock me presently
- 20 When I shall pray “O, bless my lord and husband!”
- 21 Undo that prayer by crying out as loud
- 22 “O, bless my brother!” Husband win, win brother,
- 23 Prays and destroys the prayer; no midway
- 24 ’Twixt these extremes at all.
- 25 ANTONY.
- 26 Gentle Octavia,
- 27 Let your best love draw to that point which seeks
- 28 Best to preserve it. If I lose mine honour,
- 29 I lose myself; better I were not yours
- 30 Than yours so branchless. But, as you requested,
- 31 Yourself shall go between’s. The meantime, lady,
- 32 I’ll raise the preparation of a war
- 33 Shall stain your brother. Make your soonest haste,
- 34 So your desires are yours.
- 35 OCTAVIA.
- 36 Thanks to my lord.
- 37 The Jove of power make me, most weak, most weak,
- 38 Your reconciler! Wars ’twixt you twain would be
- 39 As if the world should cleave, and that slain men
- 40 Should solder up the rift.
- 41 ANTONY.
- 42 When it appears to you where this begins,
- 43 Turn your displeasure that way, for our faults
- 44 Can never be so equal that your love
- 45 Can equally move with them. Provide your going;
- 46 Choose your own company, and command what cost
- 47 Your heart has mind to.
- 48 [_Exeunt._]
