The Tragedy Of Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark

  1. 1 Enter King, Queen, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
  2. 2 KING.
  3. 3 There’s matter in these sighs. These profound heaves
  4. 4 You must translate; ’tis fit we understand them.
  5. 5 Where is your son?
  6. 6 QUEEN.
  7. 7 Bestow this place on us a little while.
  8. 8 [_To Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who go out._]
  9. 9 Ah, my good lord, what have I seen tonight!
  10. 10 KING.
  11. 11 What, Gertrude? How does Hamlet?
  12. 12 QUEEN.
  13. 13 Mad as the sea and wind, when both contend
  14. 14 Which is the mightier. In his lawless fit
  15. 15 Behind the arras hearing something stir,
  16. 16 Whips out his rapier, cries ‘A rat, a rat!’
  17. 17 And in this brainish apprehension kills
  18. 18 The unseen good old man.
  19. 19 KING.
  20. 20 O heavy deed!
  21. 21 It had been so with us, had we been there.
  22. 22 His liberty is full of threats to all;
  23. 23 To you yourself, to us, to everyone.
  24. 24 Alas, how shall this bloody deed be answer’d?
  25. 25 It will be laid to us, whose providence
  26. 26 Should have kept short, restrain’d, and out of haunt
  27. 27 This mad young man. But so much was our love
  28. 28 We would not understand what was most fit,
  29. 29 But like the owner of a foul disease,
  30. 30 To keep it from divulging, let it feed
  31. 31 Even on the pith of life. Where is he gone?
  32. 32 QUEEN.
  33. 33 To draw apart the body he hath kill’d,
  34. 34 O’er whom his very madness, like some ore
  35. 35 Among a mineral of metals base,
  36. 36 Shows itself pure. He weeps for what is done.
  37. 37 KING.
  38. 38 O Gertrude, come away!
  39. 39 The sun no sooner shall the mountains touch
  40. 40 But we will ship him hence, and this vile deed
  41. 41 We must with all our majesty and skill
  42. 42 Both countenance and excuse.—Ho, Guildenstern!
  43. 43 Re-enter Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
  44. 44 Friends both, go join you with some further aid:
  45. 45 Hamlet in madness hath Polonius slain,
  46. 46 And from his mother’s closet hath he dragg’d him.
  47. 47 Go seek him out, speak fair, and bring the body
  48. 48 Into the chapel. I pray you haste in this.
  49. 49 [_Exeunt Rosencrantz and Guildenstern._]
  50. 50 Come, Gertrude, we’ll call up our wisest friends,
  51. 51 And let them know both what we mean to do
  52. 52 And what’s untimely done, so haply slander,
  53. 53 Whose whisper o’er the world’s diameter,
  54. 54 As level as the cannon to his blank,
  55. 55 Transports his poison’d shot, may miss our name,
  56. 56 And hit the woundless air. O, come away!
  57. 57 My soul is full of discord and dismay.
  58. 58 [_Exeunt._]
