- 1 Enter Cinna, the poet, and after him the citizens.
- 2 CINNA.
- 3 I dreamt tonight that I did feast with Caesar,
- 4 And things unluckily charge my fantasy.
- 5 I have no will to wander forth of doors,
- 6 Yet something leads me forth.
- 7 FIRST CITIZEN.
- 8 What is your name?
- 9 SECOND CITIZEN.
- 10 Whither are you going?
- 11 THIRD CITIZEN.
- 12 Where do you dwell?
- 13 FOURTH CITIZEN.
- 14 Are you a married man or a bachelor?
- 15 SECOND CITIZEN.
- 16 Answer every man directly.
- 17 FIRST CITIZEN.
- 18 Ay, and briefly.
- 19 FOURTH CITIZEN.
- 20 Ay, and wisely.
- 21 THIRD CITIZEN.
- 22 Ay, and truly, you were best.
- 23 CINNA.
- 24 What is my name? Whither am I going? Where do I dwell? Am I a married
- 25 man or a bachelor? Then, to answer every man directly and briefly,
- 26 wisely and truly. Wisely I say I am a bachelor.
- 27 SECOND CITIZEN.
- 28 That’s as much as to say they are fools that marry; you’ll bear me a
- 29 bang for that, I fear. Proceed, directly.
- 30 CINNA.
- 31 Directly, I am going to Caesar’s funeral.
- 32 FIRST CITIZEN.
- 33 As a friend, or an enemy?
- 34 CINNA.
- 35 As a friend.
- 36 SECOND CITIZEN.
- 37 That matter is answered directly.
- 38 FOURTH CITIZEN.
- 39 For your dwelling, briefly.
- 40 CINNA.
- 41 Briefly, I dwell by the Capitol.
- 42 THIRD CITIZEN.
- 43 Your name, sir, truly.
- 44 CINNA.
- 45 Truly, my name is Cinna.
- 46 FIRST CITIZEN.
- 47 Tear him to pieces! He’s a conspirator.
- 48 CINNA.
- 49 I am Cinna the poet, I am Cinna the poet.
- 50 FOURTH CITIZEN.
- 51 Tear him for his bad verses, tear him for his bad verses.
- 52 CINNA.
- 53 I am not Cinna the conspirator.
- 54 FOURTH CITIZEN.
- 55 It is no matter, his name’s Cinna; pluck but his name out of his heart,
- 56 and turn him going.
- 57 THIRD CITIZEN.
- 58 Tear him, tear him! Come; brands, ho! firebrands. To Brutus’, to
- 59 Cassius’; burn all. Some to Decius’ house, and some to Casca’s, some to
- 60 Ligarius’. Away, go!
- 61 [_Exeunt._]
