- 1 Drum. Enter Brutus, Lucilius, Titinius and Soldiers; Pindarus meeting
- 2 them; Lucius at some distance.
- 3 BRUTUS.
- 4 Stand, ho!
- 5 LUCILIUS.
- 6 Give the word, ho! and stand.
- 7 BRUTUS.
- 8 What now, Lucilius! is Cassius near?
- 9 LUCILIUS.
- 10 He is at hand, and Pindarus is come
- 11 To do you salutation from his master.
- 12 [_Pindarus gives a letter to Brutus._]
- 13 BRUTUS.
- 14 He greets me well. Your master, Pindarus,
- 15 In his own change, or by ill officers,
- 16 Hath given me some worthy cause to wish
- 17 Things done, undone: but, if he be at hand,
- 18 I shall be satisfied.
- 19 PINDARUS.
- 20 I do not doubt
- 21 But that my noble master will appear
- 22 Such as he is, full of regard and honour.
- 23 BRUTUS.
- 24 He is not doubted. A word, Lucilius;
- 25 How he received you, let me be resolv’d.
- 26 LUCILIUS.
- 27 With courtesy and with respect enough,
- 28 But not with such familiar instances,
- 29 Nor with such free and friendly conference,
- 30 As he hath us’d of old.
- 31 BRUTUS.
- 32 Thou hast describ’d
- 33 A hot friend cooling. Ever note, Lucilius,
- 34 When love begins to sicken and decay
- 35 It useth an enforced ceremony.
- 36 There are no tricks in plain and simple faith;
- 37 But hollow men, like horses hot at hand,
- 38 Make gallant show and promise of their mettle;
- 39 [_Low march within._]
- 40 But when they should endure the bloody spur,
- 41 They fall their crests, and like deceitful jades
- 42 Sink in the trial. Comes his army on?
- 43 LUCILIUS.
- 44 They meant this night in Sardis to be quarter’d;
- 45 The greater part, the horse in general,
- 46 Are come with Cassius.
- 47 Enter Cassius and Soldiers.
- 48 BRUTUS.
- 49 Hark! he is arriv’d.
- 50 March gently on to meet him.
- 51 CASSIUS.
- 52 Stand, ho!
- 53 BRUTUS.
- 54 Stand, ho! Speak the word along.
- 55 FIRST SOLDIER.
- 56 Stand!
- 57 SECOND SOLDIER.
- 58 Stand!
- 59 THIRD SOLDIER.
- 60 Stand!
- 61 CASSIUS.
- 62 Most noble brother, you have done me wrong.
- 63 BRUTUS.
- 64 Judge me, you gods; wrong I mine enemies?
- 65 And if not so, how should I wrong a brother?
- 66 CASSIUS.
- 67 Brutus, this sober form of yours hides wrongs;
- 68 And when you do them—
- 69 BRUTUS.
- 70 Cassius, be content.
- 71 Speak your griefs softly, I do know you well.
- 72 Before the eyes of both our armies here,
- 73 Which should perceive nothing but love from us,
- 74 Let us not wrangle. Bid them move away;
- 75 Then in my tent, Cassius, enlarge your griefs,
- 76 And I will give you audience.
- 77 CASSIUS.
- 78 Pindarus,
- 79 Bid our commanders lead their charges off
- 80 A little from this ground.
- 81 BRUTUS.
- 82 Lucilius, do you the like; and let no man
- 83 Come to our tent till we have done our conference.
- 84 Lucius and Titinius, guard our door.
- 85 [_Exeunt._]
