- 1 Alarum. Enter fighting soldiers of both armies; then Brutus, Messala,
- 2 young Cato, Lucilius, Flavius and others.
- 3 BRUTUS.
- 4 Yet, countrymen, O, yet hold up your heads!
- 5 CATO.
- 6 What bastard doth not? Who will go with me?
- 7 I will proclaim my name about the field.
- 8 I am the son of Marcus Cato, ho!
- 9 A foe to tyrants, and my country’s friend.
- 10 I am the son of Marcus Cato, ho!
- 11 [_Charges the enemy._]
- 12 LUCILIUS.
- 13 And I am Brutus, Marcus Brutus, I;
- 14 Brutus, my country’s friend; know me for Brutus!
- 15 [_Exit, charging the enemy. Cato is overpowered, and falls._]
- 16 LUCILIUS.
- 17 O young and noble Cato, art thou down?
- 18 Why, now thou diest as bravely as Titinius,
- 19 And mayst be honour’d, being Cato’s son.
- 20 FIRST SOLDIER.
- 21 Yield, or thou diest.
- 22 LUCILIUS.
- 23 Only I yield to die:
- 24 There is so much that thou wilt kill me straight;
- 25 [_Offering money_]
- 26 Kill Brutus, and be honour’d in his death.
- 27 FIRST SOLDIER.
- 28 We must not. A noble prisoner!
- 29 SECOND SOLDIER.
- 30 Room, ho! Tell Antony, Brutus is ta’en.
- 31 FIRST SOLDIER.
- 32 I’ll tell the news. Here comes the General.
- 33 Enter Antony.
- 34 Brutus is ta’en, Brutus is ta’en, my lord.
- 35 ANTONY.
- 36 Where is he?
- 37 LUCILIUS.
- 38 Safe, Antony; Brutus is safe enough.
- 39 I dare assure thee that no enemy
- 40 Shall ever take alive the noble Brutus.
- 41 The gods defend him from so great a shame!
- 42 When you do find him, or alive or dead,
- 43 He will be found like Brutus, like himself.
- 44 ANTONY.
- 45 This is not Brutus, friend; but, I assure you,
- 46 A prize no less in worth. Keep this man safe,
- 47 Give him all kindness. I had rather have
- 48 Such men my friends than enemies. Go on,
- 49 And see whether Brutus be alive or dead;
- 50 And bring us word unto Octavius’ tent
- 51 How everything is chanc’d.
- 52 [_Exeunt._]
