- 1 Hautboys. Servants of Macbeth attending.
- 2 Enter Duncan, Malcolm, Donalbain, Banquo, Lennox, Macduff, Ross, Angus
- 3 and Attendants.
- 4 DUNCAN.
- 5 This castle hath a pleasant seat. The air
- 6 Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself
- 7 Unto our gentle senses.
- 8 BANQUO.
- 9 This guest of summer,
- 10 The temple-haunting martlet, does approve,
- 11 By his loved mansionry, that the heaven’s breath
- 12 Smells wooingly here: no jutty, frieze,
- 13 Buttress, nor coign of vantage, but this bird
- 14 hath made his pendant bed and procreant cradle.
- 15 Where they most breed and haunt, I have observ’d
- 16 The air is delicate.
- 17 Enter Lady Macbeth.
- 18 DUNCAN.
- 19 See, see, our honour’d hostess!—
- 20 The love that follows us sometime is our trouble,
- 21 Which still we thank as love. Herein I teach you
- 22 How you shall bid God ’ild us for your pains,
- 23 And thank us for your trouble.
- 24 LADY MACBETH.
- 25 All our service,
- 26 In every point twice done, and then done double,
- 27 Were poor and single business to contend
- 28 Against those honours deep and broad wherewith
- 29 Your Majesty loads our house: for those of old,
- 30 And the late dignities heap’d up to them,
- 31 We rest your hermits.
- 32 DUNCAN.
- 33 Where’s the Thane of Cawdor?
- 34 We cours’d him at the heels, and had a purpose
- 35 To be his purveyor: but he rides well;
- 36 And his great love, sharp as his spur, hath holp him
- 37 To his home before us. Fair and noble hostess,
- 38 We are your guest tonight.
- 39 LADY MACBETH.
- 40 Your servants ever
- 41 Have theirs, themselves, and what is theirs, in compt,
- 42 To make their audit at your Highness’ pleasure,
- 43 Still to return your own.
- 44 DUNCAN.
- 45 Give me your hand;
- 46 Conduct me to mine host: we love him highly,
- 47 And shall continue our graces towards him.
- 48 By your leave, hostess.
- 49 [_Exeunt._]
