- 1 Enter Juliet.
- 2 JULIET.
- 3 The clock struck nine when I did send the Nurse,
- 4 In half an hour she promised to return.
- 5 Perchance she cannot meet him. That’s not so.
- 6 O, she is lame. Love’s heralds should be thoughts,
- 7 Which ten times faster glides than the sun’s beams,
- 8 Driving back shadows over lowering hills:
- 9 Therefore do nimble-pinion’d doves draw love,
- 10 And therefore hath the wind-swift Cupid wings.
- 11 Now is the sun upon the highmost hill
- 12 Of this day’s journey, and from nine till twelve
- 13 Is three long hours, yet she is not come.
- 14 Had she affections and warm youthful blood,
- 15 She’d be as swift in motion as a ball;
- 16 My words would bandy her to my sweet love,
- 17 And his to me.
- 18 But old folks, many feign as they were dead;
- 19 Unwieldy, slow, heavy and pale as lead.
- 20 Enter Nurse and Peter.
- 21 O God, she comes. O honey Nurse, what news?
- 22 Hast thou met with him? Send thy man away.
- 23 NURSE.
- 24 Peter, stay at the gate.
- 25 [_Exit Peter._]
- 26 JULIET.
- 27 Now, good sweet Nurse,—O Lord, why look’st thou sad?
- 28 Though news be sad, yet tell them merrily;
- 29 If good, thou sham’st the music of sweet news
- 30 By playing it to me with so sour a face.
- 31 NURSE.
- 32 I am aweary, give me leave awhile;
- 33 Fie, how my bones ache! What a jaunt have I had!
- 34 JULIET.
- 35 I would thou hadst my bones, and I thy news:
- 36 Nay come, I pray thee speak; good, good Nurse, speak.
- 37 NURSE.
- 38 Jesu, what haste? Can you not stay a while? Do you not see that I am
- 39 out of breath?
- 40 JULIET.
- 41 How art thou out of breath, when thou hast breath
- 42 To say to me that thou art out of breath?
- 43 The excuse that thou dost make in this delay
- 44 Is longer than the tale thou dost excuse.
- 45 Is thy news good or bad? Answer to that;
- 46 Say either, and I’ll stay the circumstance.
- 47 Let me be satisfied, is’t good or bad?
- 48 NURSE.
- 49 Well, you have made a simple choice; you know not how to choose a man.
- 50 Romeo? No, not he. Though his face be better than any man’s, yet his
- 51 leg excels all men’s, and for a hand and a foot, and a body, though
- 52 they be not to be talked on, yet they are past compare. He is not the
- 53 flower of courtesy, but I’ll warrant him as gentle as a lamb. Go thy
- 54 ways, wench, serve God. What, have you dined at home?
- 55 JULIET.
- 56 No, no. But all this did I know before.
- 57 What says he of our marriage? What of that?
- 58 NURSE.
- 59 Lord, how my head aches! What a head have I!
- 60 It beats as it would fall in twenty pieces.
- 61 My back o’ t’other side,—O my back, my back!
- 62 Beshrew your heart for sending me about
- 63 To catch my death with jauncing up and down.
- 64 JULIET.
- 65 I’faith, I am sorry that thou art not well.
- 66 Sweet, sweet, sweet Nurse, tell me, what says my love?
- 67 NURSE.
- 68 Your love says like an honest gentleman,
- 69 And a courteous, and a kind, and a handsome,
- 70 And I warrant a virtuous,—Where is your mother?
- 71 JULIET.
- 72 Where is my mother? Why, she is within.
- 73 Where should she be? How oddly thou repliest.
- 74 ‘Your love says, like an honest gentleman,
- 75 ‘Where is your mother?’
- 76 NURSE.
- 77 O God’s lady dear,
- 78 Are you so hot? Marry, come up, I trow.
- 79 Is this the poultice for my aching bones?
- 80 Henceforward do your messages yourself.
- 81 JULIET.
- 82 Here’s such a coil. Come, what says Romeo?
- 83 NURSE.
- 84 Have you got leave to go to shrift today?
- 85 JULIET.
- 86 I have.
- 87 NURSE.
- 88 Then hie you hence to Friar Lawrence’ cell;
- 89 There stays a husband to make you a wife.
- 90 Now comes the wanton blood up in your cheeks,
- 91 They’ll be in scarlet straight at any news.
- 92 Hie you to church. I must another way,
- 93 To fetch a ladder by the which your love
- 94 Must climb a bird’s nest soon when it is dark.
- 95 I am the drudge, and toil in your delight;
- 96 But you shall bear the burden soon at night.
- 97 Go. I’ll to dinner; hie you to the cell.
- 98 JULIET.
- 99 Hie to high fortune! Honest Nurse, farewell.
- 100 [_Exeunt._]
