The First Part Of Henry The Sixth

  1. 1 Sennet. Enter King, Gloucester and Exeter.
  2. 2 KING HENRY.
  3. 3 Have you perused the letters from the Pope,
  4. 4 The Emperor, and the Earl of Armagnac?
  5. 5 GLOUCESTER.
  6. 6 I have, my lord; and their intent is this:
  7. 7 They humbly sue unto your Excellence
  8. 8 To have a godly peace concluded of
  9. 9 Between the realms of England and of France.
  10. 10 KING HENRY.
  11. 11 How doth your Grace affect their motion?
  12. 12 GLOUCESTER.
  13. 13 Well, my good lord, and as the only means
  14. 14 To stop effusion of our Christian blood
  15. 15 And stablish quietness on every side.
  16. 16 KING HENRY.
  17. 17 Ay, marry, uncle, for I always thought
  18. 18 It was both impious and unnatural
  19. 19 That such immanity and bloody strife
  20. 20 Should reign among professors of one faith.
  21. 21 GLOUCESTER.
  22. 22 Beside, my lord, the sooner to effect
  23. 23 And surer bind this knot of amity,
  24. 24 The Earl of Armagnac, near knit to Charles,
  25. 25 A man of great authority in France,
  26. 26 Proffers his only daughter to your Grace
  27. 27 In marriage, with a large and sumptuous dowry.
  28. 28 KING HENRY.
  29. 29 Marriage, uncle! Alas, my years are young!
  30. 30 And fitter is my study and my books
  31. 31 Than wanton dalliance with a paramour.
  32. 32 Yet call th’ ambassadors; and, as you please,
  33. 33 So let them have their answers every one.
  34. 34 I shall be well content with any choice
  35. 35 Tends to God’s glory and my country’s weal.
  36. 36 Enter Winchester in Cardinal’s habit, a Legate and two Ambassadors.
  37. 37 EXETER.
  38. 38 What, is my Lord of Winchester install’d
  39. 39 And call’d unto a cardinal’s degree?
  40. 40 Then I perceive that will be verified
  41. 41 Henry the Fifth did sometime prophesy:
  42. 42 “If once he come to be a cardinal,
  43. 43 He’ll make his cap co-equal with the crown.”
  44. 44 KING HENRY.
  45. 45 My Lords Ambassadors, your several suits
  46. 46 Have been consider’d and debated on.
  47. 47 Your purpose is both good and reasonable;
  48. 48 And therefore are we certainly resolved
  49. 49 To draw conditions of a friendly peace,
  50. 50 Which by my Lord of Winchester we mean
  51. 51 Shall be transported presently to France.
  52. 52 GLOUCESTER.
  53. 53 And for the proffer of my lord your master,
  54. 54 I have inform’d his Highness so at large,
  55. 55 As liking of the lady’s virtuous gifts,
  56. 56 Her beauty and the value of her dower,
  57. 57 He doth intend she shall be England’s Queen.
  58. 58 KING HENRY.
  59. 59 In argument and proof of which contract,
  60. 60 Bear her this jewel, pledge of my affection.
  61. 61 And so, my Lord Protector, see them guarded
  62. 62 And safely brought to Dover; where inshipp’d,
  63. 63 Commit them to the fortune of the sea.
  64. 64 [_Exeunt all but Winchester and Legate._]
  65. 65 WINCHESTER.
  66. 66 Stay my lord legate; you shall first receive
  67. 67 The sum of money which I promised
  68. 68 Should be deliver’d to his Holiness
  69. 69 For clothing me in these grave ornaments.
  70. 70 LEGATE.
  71. 71 I will attend upon your lordship’s leisure.
  72. 72 WINCHESTER.
  73. 73 [_Aside_.] Now Winchester will not submit, I trow,
  74. 74 Or be inferior to the proudest peer.
  75. 75 Humphrey of Gloucester, thou shalt well perceive
  76. 76 That neither in birth or for authority,
  77. 77 The Bishop will be overborne by thee.
  78. 78 I’ll either make thee stoop and bend thy knee,
  79. 79 Or sack this country with a mutiny.
  80. 80 [_Exeunt._]
