The Tragedy Of King Lear

  1. 1 Enter, with drum and colours Edmund, Regan, Officers, Soldiers and
  2. 2 others.
  3. 3 EDMUND.
  4. 4 Know of the Duke if his last purpose hold,
  5. 5 Or whether since he is advis’d by aught
  6. 6 To change the course, he’s full of alteration
  7. 7 And self-reproving, bring his constant pleasure.
  8. 8 [_To an Officer, who goes out._]
  9. 9 REGAN.
  10. 10 Our sister’s man is certainly miscarried.
  11. 11 EDMUND.
  12. 12 ’Tis to be doubted, madam.
  13. 13 REGAN.
  14. 14 Now, sweet lord,
  15. 15 You know the goodness I intend upon you:
  16. 16 Tell me but truly, but then speak the truth,
  17. 17 Do you not love my sister?
  18. 18 EDMUND.
  19. 19 In honour’d love.
  20. 20 REGAN.
  21. 21 But have you never found my brother’s way
  22. 22 To the forfended place?
  23. 23 EDMUND.
  24. 24 That thought abuses you.
  25. 25 REGAN.
  26. 26 I am doubtful that you have been conjunct
  27. 27 And bosom’d with her, as far as we call hers.
  28. 28 EDMUND.
  29. 29 No, by mine honour, madam.
  30. 30 REGAN.
  31. 31 I never shall endure her, dear my lord,
  32. 32 Be not familiar with her.
  33. 33 EDMUND.
  34. 34 Fear not,
  35. 35 She and the Duke her husband!
  36. 36 Enter with drum and colours Albany, Goneril and Soldiers.
  37. 37 GONERIL.
  38. 38 [_Aside._] I had rather lose the battle than that sister
  39. 39 Should loosen him and me.
  40. 40 ALBANY.
  41. 41 Our very loving sister, well be-met.
  42. 42 Sir, this I heard: the King is come to his daughter,
  43. 43 With others whom the rigour of our state
  44. 44 Forc’d to cry out. Where I could not be honest,
  45. 45 I never yet was valiant. For this business,
  46. 46 It toucheth us as France invades our land,
  47. 47 Not bolds the King, with others whom I fear
  48. 48 Most just and heavy causes make oppose.
  49. 49 EDMUND.
  50. 50 Sir, you speak nobly.
  51. 51 REGAN.
  52. 52 Why is this reason’d?
  53. 53 GONERIL.
  54. 54 Combine together ’gainst the enemy;
  55. 55 For these domestic and particular broils
  56. 56 Are not the question here.
  57. 57 ALBANY.
  58. 58 Let’s, then, determine with the ancient of war
  59. 59 On our proceeding.
  60. 60 EDMUND.
  61. 61 I shall attend you presently at your tent.
  62. 62 REGAN.
  63. 63 Sister, you’ll go with us?
  64. 64 GONERIL.
  65. 65 No.
  66. 66 REGAN.
  67. 67 ’Tis most convenient; pray you, go with us.
  68. 68 GONERIL.
  69. 69 [_Aside_.] O, ho, I know the riddle. I will go.
  70. 70 [_Exeunt Edmund, Regan, Goneril, Officers, Soldiers and Attendants._]
  71. 71 As they are going out, enter Edgar disguised.
  72. 72 EDGAR.
  73. 73 If e’er your grace had speech with man so poor,
  74. 74 Hear me one word.
  75. 75 ALBANY.
  76. 76 I’ll overtake you. Speak.
  77. 77 EDGAR.
  78. 78 Before you fight the battle, ope this letter.
  79. 79 If you have victory, let the trumpet sound
  80. 80 For him that brought it: wretched though I seem,
  81. 81 I can produce a champion that will prove
  82. 82 What is avouched there. If you miscarry,
  83. 83 Your business of the world hath so an end,
  84. 84 And machination ceases. Fortune love you!
  85. 85 ALBANY.
  86. 86 Stay till I have read the letter.
  87. 87 EDGAR.
  88. 88 I was forbid it.
  89. 89 When time shall serve, let but the herald cry,
  90. 90 And I’ll appear again.
  91. 91 ALBANY.
  92. 92 Why, fare thee well. I will o’erlook thy paper.
  93. 93 [_Exit Edgar._]
  94. 94 Enter Edmund.
  95. 95 EDMUND.
  96. 96 The enemy’s in view; draw up your powers.
  97. 97 Here is the guess of their true strength and forces
  98. 98 By diligent discovery; but your haste
  99. 99 Is now urg’d on you.
  100. 100 ALBANY.
  101. 101 We will greet the time.
  102. 102 [_Exit._]
  103. 103 EDMUND.
  104. 104 To both these sisters have I sworn my love;
  105. 105 Each jealous of the other, as the stung
  106. 106 Are of the adder. Which of them shall I take?
  107. 107 Both? One? Or neither? Neither can be enjoy’d,
  108. 108 If both remain alive. To take the widow
  109. 109 Exasperates, makes mad her sister Goneril;
  110. 110 And hardly shall I carry out my side,
  111. 111 Her husband being alive. Now, then, we’ll use
  112. 112 His countenance for the battle; which being done,
  113. 113 Let her who would be rid of him devise
  114. 114 His speedy taking off. As for the mercy
  115. 115 Which he intends to Lear and to Cordelia,
  116. 116 The battle done, and they within our power,
  117. 117 Shall never see his pardon: for my state
  118. 118 Stands on me to defend, not to debate.
  119. 119 [_Exit._]
