1 Alarum within. Enter with drum and colours, Lear, Cordelia and their
2 Forces, and exeunt.
3 Enter Edgar and Gloucester.
4 EDGAR.
5 Here, father, take the shadow of this tree
6 For your good host; pray that the right may thrive:
7 If ever I return to you again,
8 I’ll bring you comfort.
9 GLOUCESTER.
10 Grace go with you, sir!
11 [_Exit Edgar._]
12 Alarum and retreat within. Enter Edgar.
13 EDGAR.
14 Away, old man, give me thy hand, away!
15 King Lear hath lost, he and his daughter ta’en:
16 Give me thy hand; come on!
17 GLOUCESTER.
18 No further, sir; a man may rot even here.
19 EDGAR.
20 What, in ill thoughts again? Men must endure
21 Their going hence, even as their coming hither;
22 Ripeness is all. Come on.
23 GLOUCESTER.
24 And that’s true too.
