← Back to browse Twelfth Night; Or, What You Will
- 1 Enter Sebastian and Antonio.
- 2 SEBASTIAN.
- 3 I would not by my will have troubled you,
- 4 But since you make your pleasure of your pains,
- 5 I will no further chide you.
- 6 ANTONIO.
- 7 I could not stay behind you: my desire,
- 8 More sharp than filed steel, did spur me forth;
- 9 And not all love to see you, though so much,
- 10 As might have drawn one to a longer voyage,
- 11 But jealousy what might befall your travel,
- 12 Being skilless in these parts; which to a stranger,
- 13 Unguided and unfriended, often prove
- 14 Rough and unhospitable. My willing love,
- 15 The rather by these arguments of fear,
- 16 Set forth in your pursuit.
- 17 SEBASTIAN.
- 18 My kind Antonio,
- 19 I can no other answer make but thanks,
- 20 And thanks, and ever thanks; and oft good turns
- 21 Are shuffled off with such uncurrent pay.
- 22 But were my worth, as is my conscience, firm,
- 23 You should find better dealing. What’s to do?
- 24 Shall we go see the relics of this town?
- 25 ANTONIO.
- 26 Tomorrow, sir; best first go see your lodging.
- 27 SEBASTIAN.
- 28 I am not weary, and ’tis long to night;
- 29 I pray you, let us satisfy our eyes
- 30 With the memorials and the things of fame
- 31 That do renown this city.
- 32 ANTONIO.
- 33 Would you’d pardon me.
- 34 I do not without danger walk these streets.
- 35 Once in a sea-fight, ’gainst the Count his galleys,
- 36 I did some service, of such note indeed,
- 37 That were I ta’en here, it would scarce be answer’d.
- 38 SEBASTIAN.
- 39 Belike you slew great number of his people.
- 40 ANTONIO.
- 41 Th’ offence is not of such a bloody nature,
- 42 Albeit the quality of the time and quarrel
- 43 Might well have given us bloody argument.
- 44 It might have since been answered in repaying
- 45 What we took from them, which for traffic’s sake,
- 46 Most of our city did. Only myself stood out,
- 47 For which, if I be lapsed in this place,
- 48 I shall pay dear.
- 49 SEBASTIAN.
- 50 Do not then walk too open.
- 51 ANTONIO.
- 52 It doth not fit me. Hold, sir, here’s my purse.
- 53 In the south suburbs, at the Elephant,
- 54 Is best to lodge. I will bespeak our diet
- 55 Whiles you beguile the time and feed your knowledge
- 56 With viewing of the town. There shall you have me.
- 57 SEBASTIAN.
- 58 Why I your purse?
- 59 ANTONIO.
- 60 Haply your eye shall light upon some toy
- 61 You have desire to purchase; and your store,
- 62 I think, is not for idle markets, sir.
- 63 SEBASTIAN.
- 64 I’ll be your purse-bearer, and leave you for an hour.
- 65 ANTONIO.
- 66 To th’ Elephant.
- 67 SEBASTIAN.
- 68 I do remember.
- 69 [_Exeunt._]
